Rainy Days, Bright Minds: How We Keep Kids Engaged Indoors

Long rainy summer season has started in Tokyo! at our international preschool in Tokyo, we believe that every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, explore, and we don’t let the weather get in the way of our students. While we may be indoors, it never affects or dims our bright minded students learning capabilities.

On rainy days, our classrooms transform into vibrant – activity filled spaces where creativity, movement, and learning nurtures in the environmnet. Heres how we keep little minds active, curious, and engaged even on those rainy days.

私たちの東京にあるインターナショナルプリスクールでは、「毎日が学びと成長、探究のチャンス」だと信じており、天気に関係なく子どもたちの学びの意欲を大切にしています。
たとえ屋内でも、子どもたちの明るく柔軟な思考は決して止まりません。

⛈️ Why Indoor Engagement Matters in Early Childhood

Children love movement especially outside along with hands-on-experiences, and meaningful social interactions. Being indoors doesn’t mean that we can’t achieve the things stated above, but further encourages children to create those environments that are just as enjoyable and fun.

Indoor activities at our preschool are carefully planned to support:

·      Cognitive growth through puzzles, games, and creative challenges

·      Motor development through movement-based play

·      Emotional expression through art, music, storytelling

·      Language and communication through group interaction

⛈️ なぜ幼児期の室内活動が大切なのか

幼児は、身体を動かすこと、手を使った体験、そして人との関わりが大好きです。
屋内であっても、これらを叶えることは十分に可能であり、むしろ子どもたち自身が楽しく魅力的な環境を創り出すことができます。

私たちのプリスクールでは、以下のような目的で室内アクティビティを計画的に行っています：

🌟 Indoor Activities That Spark Joy and Learning

1.        Creative Art

Our classrooms features rotating art corners with activities like:

·      Finger painting with seasonal colors

·      Making art from recycled materials

·      Paper crafts and origamis

These help children explore textures, colors, and self expression while also building their artistic confidence.

🌟 子どもたちが夢中になる室内アクティビティ

1. クリエイティブ・アート
教室内には、季節に応じたアートコーナーが設置されています：

·       季節の色を使ったフィンガーペインティング

·       リサイクル素材を使ったアート作品づくり

·       折り紙や紙工作

これらの活動を通じて、色や質感を楽しみながら、自己表現とアートへの自信が育ちます。

2.        Role-Play Corners

Our classrooms play areas become imaginary role play environments.

·      Kids assign roles to one another and act out stories

·      Teachers guide gently with open minded questions like “what happens next?”

These activities build language development, empathy, narrative thinking.

2. ごっこ遊びコーナー
教室のプレイエリアは、想像の世界に早変わり！

·       子どもたちが役割を決めて物語を演じます

·       先生は「次に何が起きるかな？」といったオープンな問いかけで優しくサポート

言語力、思いやり、ストーリーテリング力が自然と身につきます。

3.        Recess and Music Time

Physical activity is essential - even indoors. We use music and play time to keep bodies moving.

·      Indoor animal walks and stretches

·      Dancing to international music

·      Playing with peers on the mat

This supports gross motor development in children and boosts immune system.

3. 室内レッスン＆ミュージックタイム
身体を動かすことは、室内でもとても大切です。音楽や遊びを通して体を活発に動かします。

·       動物の動きを真似たストレッチ

·       世界各国の音楽でダンス

·       マットの上での友達とのプレイタイム

これらは、粗大運動能力の発達や免疫力向上にもつながります。

4.        Games and STEM exploration

Rainy days are the perfect time for quiet concentration, we offer:

·      Logic games, cards, puzzles, etc.

·      Building with blocks and legos

·      Science and technology experiments

·      Math homework and support

雨の日は、集中して静かに取り組む時間にもぴったり。

👩‍🏫 The Role of Our Teachers

Whether its rainy or not, our teachers are well prepared for their lessons keeping our students engaged at all times. They are also trained to observe each child’s interests and needs and adjust activities in real-time to keep learning meaningful and fun.

Teachers also encourage self-directed-play empowering children to make choices on their own, solve challenges and work together to create their own fun indoor activities.

雨の日も晴れの日も、先生たちは常に準備万端でレッスンに臨み、子どもたちの興味を引き続けます。
また、一人ひとりの子どもの関心やニーズを観察し、その場で活動を調整して、学びを意味のある楽しいものにしています。
先生たちは、子どもたちが自分で選択し、課題を解決し、協力して室内遊びを自分たちで創り出せるように、自主的な遊びを促しています。

🌈 Indoors Doesn’t Mean Less Learning

At Four Leaves International school Tokyo, we try our best to provide outdoor activities and play time for our students to engage on sunny days which helps boost immune system.  At the end of the day, kids are more focused indoors and have better results in cognitive growth on the desk rather than on the playground.

The weather may change – but our commitment to learning never does.
